Will NarrowBand-IoT replace other wireless technologies in industrial automation? What exactly is NarrowBand? NarrowBand-IoT (NB-IoT) is a radio technology in the field of LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) dedicated for IoT devices , operating on the licensed frequency band used by telecommunications operators.

NarrowBand IoT or simply nb-iot is just like a LTE network and uses LTE networks for communication. But the nb-iot uses totally a different RF frequency. And since the data transfer rate upload and download is in the order of a few kilobits per second. Abstract—Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a re-cently standardized technology to support machine-type com-munications (MTC) in Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) Pro networks. NB-IoT can enable energy-efficient communication with extended coverage on a narrow bandwidth of 180 kHz for low-cost MTC devices (MTCDs). Narrowband-IoT 3 217 Key findings The evolution of the Internet of Things means that there is an urgent need for a low-power way to connect thousands of devices in field. NB-IoT fits the bill perfectly.

Narrowband-IoT is a new network designed specifically for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is based on the international 3GPP standard and is used to transfer small amounts of data in the Internet of Things.

The IoT communications take place in the guard bands of LTE bands 2,4 and 12, which are already in use by T-Mobile. The bandwidth devoted to IoT communications is about 200KHz, which is a tiny

The specification was frozen in 3GPP Release 13, in June 2016. Other 3GPP IoT technologies include eMTC and EC-GSM-IoT. NB-IoT focuses specifically on indoor coverage, low cost, long battery life, and high connection density.

Introduction Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) is a 3GPP radio technology standard that addresses the requirements of the Internet of Things (IoT). The technology provides improved indoor coverage, support of a massive number of low throughput devices, NB-IoT Internet of Things uses a subset of the LTE standard, but limits the bandwidth to a single narrow-band of 200kHz. It uses OFDM Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing modulation for downlink communication and SC-FDMA Frequency Division Multiple Access for uplink communications. NB-IoT supports ultra-low complexity devices with very narrow bandwidth, 200 kHz.

Relative to a centre frequency F c, assume that it extends over the range – δF to + δF. Then if 2δF < F c /10, it may be considered as narrowband noise.
